Cat Litter: Not the sexiest subject to blog about. Kind of like blogging about toilet paper. But just as there are a wide variety of qualities and styles of toilet paper out there (all with the same basic purpose, right?), there exists an almost uncountable number of cat litter brands. Join me as I review the Boxiecat litter brand!
As a feline-only veterinarian, I am constantly asked about cat litter. In turn, I’m constantly giving advice about cat litter as well as litter box care. A dirty litter box is the #1 reason for a cat to begin urinating or defecating outside of the box (i.e. house-soiling). As with most things in life, this issue is so much easier to prevent than to treat after the fact.
Scooping the litter box is not the most glamorous task, but it has to be done. And done regularly. And done right.
Part of the litter box experience involves the type of cat litter you choose. A good cat litter needs to a) make your cat want to use the box and b) make you not dread scooping the box.
A quick search of cat litter brands on Amazon showed a minimum of 25 brands, which is NOT an all-inclusive list.
Why?!? How can there be SO many brands and everyone thinks their brand is the best?
I have not tried every brand of litter. I have, on the other hand, probably tried every “type” of litter. Asking your cat is the best way to find out what litter they like!
You’ve first got the big category of clumping and non-clumping. Then within those, you’ve got clay, pelleted (of many different formulas) and then the silicone/crystal type. I’m probably missing something here. It’s overwhelming.
There’s no “one” single best cat litter for ALL cats, but Boxie has something for EVERY cat!
I first heard about Boxiecat from another veterinarian who used the brand, so I was curious. The company has won tons of awards. But I needed to see for myself.
I started with the regular Boxiecat clay clumping litter, then ultimately moved onto the Pro version. Most recently I tried the BoxiePro Air and the Eco version. I’ve essentially tried all the versions except the Gently Scented.
I love them all. I do. But what my cats’ like trumps what I like.
Their tagline is The Cleanest Litter Box Experience™. I’d agree.
Listen, I HATED clay cat litter until I found Boxiecat.
Guess who loves clay litter… most cats! Yes – clay litter is by far the most popular type of litter. Why? Because it’s soft and sand-like. It’s easy on cats’ sensitive little feet. It mimics the feel of dirt (i.e. where they would “go” if they were outside).
Boxiecat has the “FLAT-TOP” technology. The clumps form instantly and the urine doesn’t sink to the bottom and cause a gross mush of litter that you have to scrape up.
No, really. It’s instant.
What this means is that you can scoop 10-15 seconds after your cat has left the box (and of course you know you’re telling them “Good boy! Wow! Good Job!”).
As of this minute, Boxiecat has nine different formulas of cat litter – wow! You can break these nine litter types into three categories. Clay, Lightweight and Ultra-Sustainable.
Boxiecat – Clay:
My go-to litter for home and my feline-hospital cats.
This includes the standard Boxiecat Scent-Free Litter, Boxiecat Extra Strength Litter, Boxiecat Gently Scented Litter and BoxiePro Deep Clean Probiotic Litter.
This is the litter we use for the cats who live in our veterinary hospital (Apache, Panther & Louie). They love it.
It’s just litter, you say. Not so fast. This is not your average clay litter. Boxiecat litter never contains “fillers” such as limestone, fossil fuel oils and preservatives that “cheaper” (by cost and quality) litter may contain.
In addition, the “Pro” versions contain probiotics which are microorganisms that produce enzymes that destroy odor-causing bacteria. This litter is specifically formulated to eliminate odors before they start.
This workhorse of a litter is what I use in my home. My cats love it.
Now, anyone who tells you there is zero odor immediately when a cat poops is a liar. Ha! But Boxie does an amazing job with a tough task and the odor quickly resolves.
I use the BoxiePro at home because one of my boxes is in my bathroom. I want the best of the best. At the clinic, we use the standard Boxiecat Scent-Free and purchase it in the 40# pack. We are overflowing with litter!
The standard Boxiecat and the BoxiePro would also be appropriate for automatic / robot-type boxes (which I know from first-hand experience). I used to have a Litter Robot. After many years it finally died. I replaced it with what ended up being my absolute favorite box, a gigantic box by ExquisiCat.
Boxiecat – Lightweight (aka “Air”):
Shockingly lightweight, actually.
These litters have the word “Air” in their title. This category includes Boxiecat Air™ Lightweight Scent Free, Boxiecat Air™ Lightweight Extra Strength, Boxiecat Air™ Lightweight Gently Scented and BoxiePro Air™ Lightweight Deep Clean Probiotic Clumping Litter.
This category of litter is plant-based, renewable, biodegradable, sustainable, and USA-sourced. It is not a clay litter.
“Air” is such a great description because it literally feels like you are scooping through the air. There is zero drag! You have to try it to understand how it feels like “nothing.”
The BoxiePro Air would be my #1 choice, but my cats prefer the non-Air version. So you can guess which one we use.
This litter is so light, it's like scooping nothing!
My favorite litter, but in the "Air" (i.e. super lightweight) version!
Boxiecat – Ultra Sustainable:
Man, I love this litter.
This category describes Boxie Eco™ Farm to Box Ultra Sustainable Plant-based Clumping Cat Litter.
Boxiecat describes this litter as “An all-natural, eco-conscious solution that improves soil health and reduces carbon pawprint with each bag. Eco™ is not just cat litter. It’s our expression of love for cats. A cats’ well-being starts with a healthy planet.”
What does that really mean? It’s made with wheat and rye. It’s biodegradable. It’s locally sourced, meaning it’s close to the processing plant so the trucks don’t have to drive across the country. And they practice “conservation tillage” which reduces fuel use and CO2 emissions.
All this for cat litter. Amazing!
Awesome eco-friendly litter choice!
Why so many choices?
Again, what your cat likes may be different from what my cat likes. Most cats prefer a clay-based, clumping litter (like the standard Boxiecat or BoxiePro). However, cats are cats and they have their own opinions.
Why I like the company:
- They donate to shelters. According to their website, Boxie has donated 268,145 lbs of Litter to shelters so far in 2023. That’s 6,704 bags of the 40# size. They want shelter cats to have a good litter box experience too.
- They care about where their litter ingredients come from. American-sourced ingredients, chosen with a conscious.
- They are a small company. Boxiecat started out as a subscription / home-delivery service and now they can be found at retailers all over the country.
- They are cat people. They have cats. They love cats and they want their (and our) cats to have the best.
Which Boxie Do My Cats Use?
My three hospital cats use the regular Boxiecat Scent-Free Litter. We get it in the 40# bag. One of our hospital cats (Louie) has Feline Asthma, so a low-dust litter is a must. At home, my cats use BoxiePro as well as the Litter Extender.
In addition, Boxiecat also offers clean-up bags and a Stain & Odor product for those (hopefully) infrequent accidents.
In Summary
When it comes to cat litter, Boxiecat is truly in a league of its own. I was excited to recently see it at my local big-box pet store. It’s a small company doing great big things.

This was a great review! Now I can’t wait to try this litter!
Thanks for your comments! I really like the Air version the best but I’m not the one going in it so… 😺
